Judging Sign-Up Time Approaches

Are you interested in learning more about judging livestock, horse, wool or meat? Would like to know how to make consumer decisions or identify important items for your home? Does learning more about parliamentary procedure interest you? Are you a person that enjoys giving speeches or reading poetry? Are you enrolled in the clothing project? Do you enjoy shooting sports or wildlife identification? If you answered yes to any of these questions we have the activity for you…EDDY COUNTY 4-H JUDGING.

Novice and junior members will prepare for the 2010 District Contest to be held in Ft. Sumner June 16th & 17th. Senior members will prepare for the 2010 State 4-H Conference held in Las Cruces in July.

Practices are fixing to start in April. Before practices begin we will have two sign-up days. The first sign-up day will be Wednesday, April 14th from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Extension Office. The second will be Thursday, April 15th from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the AHS Ag Shop. If you are interested in judging, but can’t make it to sign-up please let Amy or Charly know by that week. We will then make a practice schedule and get it out to you quickly, so practices can begin the following week.

The Artesia Wal-Mart store generously gave Eddy County 4-H a $1000 community grant. The money will be used to send 4-H members to camps and to help with 4-H activities.

Novice Day Camp Moves Location

The 2010 Eddy County 4-H Novice Day Camp is moving from the Eddy County Fairgrounds to Zia Intermediate School in Artesia. The camp is scheduled for Saturday, February 27th. The day will begin at 8 a.m. There are twenty one 4-H members enrolled in the camp!

Get in the Groove with 4-H

The Eddy County 4-H Council is excited to announce the 2nd Annual Eddy County 4-H Novice Day Camp, "Get in the Groove with 4-H." This all-day camp will be held Saturday, February 27th at the Community Building in Artesia. Campers will learn about various 4-H projects and contests, participate in fun activities, and most importantly meet lots of new friends. All novice age members are encouraged to attend. The registration cost is $15 (includes a t-shirt to tie-dye). All novice members should have received a registration form in the mail, but if you need one please let the Extension Office know.

Rodeo First Aid

The new 4-H Rodeo season is fast approaching. Before anyone is allowed to enter rodeos they must first take our mandatory first aid class. The class will be held Tuesday, February 23rd at 6:30 p.m. at the Extension Office. Those of you already enrolled in rodeo should have gotten a packet of information to bring back with you. If you are interested in adding rodeo please call the Extension Office so we can get you added and send you the necessary paperwork.

Chili & Bingo

We here at Agent's headquarters are always looking for new and exciting activities for our 4-H families, thus Family Fun Nights were born. The first in a series (hopefully) of fun nights is Chili & Bingo. Families are encouraged to come out to eat yummy chili and play bingo for great prizes. We are asking for donations for bingo to help cover the cost of the chili and prizes. The first night is this Friday, February 5th at the Community Building in Artesia at 6 p.m. The second night is Friday, February 19th at the Extension Office. We ask that you RSVP the week before so we have enough chili. Hope to see you there!

North Pole

The 2009 4-H Achievement Awards, "The North Pole," were held on Friday, December 11th. The awards were one week late because of a brief stop in Eddy County by winter. The Eddy County 4-H Council did a wonderful job putting on the awards. The highlight was Santa Claus stopping by to visit. Congratulations to all the 4-H members that received awards and recognition. A special congratulations to Dana Thalman and Lane Waldrop were winning Outstanding Record Book Awards.

We'll Take You for a Ride on Our Big Pink Tractor!

Every year the Eddy County 4-H Council votes on a county wide community service project. This year they chose to do a Wrangler Tough Enough to Wear Pink event during the Eddy County Fair. Clubs jumped right in helping raise money. Also, during the fair members sold Wrangler Tough Enough to Wear Pink merchandise. All of the money raised was then donated to the University of New Mexico Cancer Center. $2345.50 was raised by all the 4-H members hard work! State 4-H Rodeo Finals

The New Mexico State 4-H Rodeo Finals are this weekend, September 5th, 6th, and 7th in Clayton. Eddy County will be well represented by Reagan Washburn, Hunter Brown, Miles and Preston McCullar, Lindsey Ballard, Grant Chester, Dakota Ferguson, Will Watts, Dakota Barrow, Kendra Stephens, and Dalton Chadwick. County Contest

The 2009 Eddy County 4-H Contest was held on Saturday, May 16th and Tuesday, May 19th in Artesia. There were twenty five participants. Contests held were Parliamentary Procedure, Home Economics Skill-a-Thon, Consumer Decision Making, Meats Identification, Crops Judging, Livestock Skill-a-Thon, and Wildlife. Results from county contest will be featured in the June newsletter and in the newspaper. Thank you to Ryann Farris, Colton McAlister, Lane Waldrop, Dakota Ferguson, Shalie McAlister, Joy Menefee, Jacy Rich, Taisha Perea, Nicholas Thompson, Makayala Broyles, Brieanna McCormick, Dana Thalman, Tori Null, Taylor Null, DeLaney Hanagan, Hondo Woods, Bayli Avery, McKinah Gwynne, Colton Ferguson, Tracer Woods, Bryce McAlister, Kellan Bennett, Garrett Green, Hunter Ash, and Clayton Vaughn for participating. County contest helps wrap up a hectic after school judging practice season. Members have one week off before summer practices begin in preparation for District Contest in June in Capitan.

It's Quilting Time!!

For all you aspiring quilters do we have the class for you. Eddy County 4-H Quilting Leader, Cooky Dean, is planning a quilting class. The class will be Saturday, May 9th from 8:30 to 11 at the Community Building on the fairgrounds in Artesia. This class will be a wonderful opportunity to learn lots about quilting from an expert! If you aren't already enrolled in the quilting project, but would like to attend please call the Extension Office to get enrolled. If you are already signed up just bring your project book and the appropriate fabric. Have a great time quilting!

Snow, Mud & Good Fun - YGA 2009

15 4-H members from Eddy County (Bayli Avery, Kellan Bennett, Wesley Burnett, Colton Ferguson, Dakota Ferguson, Garrett Green, Cooper Hall, DeLaney Hanagan, Emily Hutchison, Shalie McAlister, Joy Menefee, Tori Null, J.D. Runyan, Dana Thalman, and Lane Waldrop) and 3 chaperones (John Ross Null, Kacy Thalman, and Amy Kelley) made a journey north for the 2009 Youth-Get-Away Camp held near Tajique. We were greeted by snow, and lots of it. Not wanting to miss out on any of the fun we bundled up and made the best of it. The Friday dance had a blackout theme. Eddy County was the coolest county there thanks to our glow sticks. After dancing until late Friday night it was up early Saturday for more fun. Our breakfast highlight was embarrassing Tori on her 12th birthday by having the whole camp serenade her. By morning the snow had stopped and lots of mud arrived. Campers trekked through mud to attend a great opening ceremony and then to their workshops. It looked like they were having lots of fun learning about leadership, challenging themselves, working as a team, and many other neat workshops. Saturday night brought another dance. The theme of this dance was a Mask Dance. Thanks to Tori's mom, Netta, the girls had some really cool masks. Sunday it was up again early for packing, cleaning, breakfast, and closing ceremony. At the closing ceremony Lane, DeLaney, and Colton were recognized for outstanding campers in their groups! Also, Tori and Cooper were members of the outstanding group. After the closing ceremony was over we packed the van and cars and headed back to Carlsbad. Make sure to ask any of the 4-H members that attended for more on how much fun they had.

Tough Enough to Wear Pink?

The Eddy County 4-H Council would like to know if you are Tough Enough to Wear Pink? Saturday, August 1st will be Tough Enough to Wear Pink at the Eddy County Fair. 4-H members and their families are encouraged to wear pink that day in support of breast cancer research. Just in case you don't have a pink shirt, no need to worry, the 4-H Council will be selling Wrangler Tough Enough to Wear Pink? merchandise during the fair. We are calling upon 4-H clubs and 4-H families to help raise money that will be donated after the Eddy County Fair to the University of New Mexico Cancer Research Center. Be creative and think of interesting ways to raise money for a great cause! Just please remember to run all fundraising ideas by the Extension Office. Record Books Made Easy

After seeing the words record book did you run screaming from the room or maybe break into sweat? If so, you are not alone. Record books in the past have not been everyone's friend. However, this year we are pleased to offer two record book trainings. These trainings will help guide you through the record book process and discover the new and improved project record sheets. Whether this is your first year in 4-H or your tenth you will find something useful at the training, I promise. The first training will be Tuesday, April 7th at 5:30 p.m. at the Extension Office. The second training will be Thursday, April 16th at 5:30 p.m. at the Community Building on the fairgrounds. Please join us for one of the trainings. As an added bonus there will be door prizes!

Hello everybody!

Eddy County 4-H is finally joining the 21st century by having our own blog. We will be sharing all the exciting events we have planned, great stories, what is going on at the state and national level, and other interesting information. The blog will be a fun, casual way to share information and comments. However, we want to make sure this blog is a positive, fun, and safe place to share stories and discuss what is going on in 4-H. Don't forget you will find that newsletters, e-mails, and the Extension Office website are still the best place to find information on deadlines, club requirements, judging contests, fair, upcoming meetings and events, etc. Our goal is to update the blog at least once a week, so keep visiting!
